NFL Betters Increases Betting Activity In 2024

According to Optimove's upcoming "Insights 2024-25 Consumer Reports on NFL Betting Intentions," cited by CDC Gaming Reports, bettors are gearing up for more frequently engaged bets as the 2024 NFL season approaches. The report, scheduled to be released on Aug. 22, takes a closer look at betting behavior and trends as the NFL season kicks off with a Sept. 5 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens.

The report describes a significant year-over-year increase in betting activity. "Seventy-one percent of wage earners will bet on one or more games each week, up from 63% in 2023," it stresses. The frequency of betting multiple times a week is also increasing, with 43% of bettors planning to bet multiple times a week, up from 37% last year. Regular-season betting is especially popular, with 69% to 79% saying they will bet in the regular season in 2023.

Preference and popularity of betting types

As for the type of betting favored by NFL fans, point spreads are the most popular, with 68% of respondents showing a preference for this type of betting. This was followed by over/under betting and moneyline betting, which is favored by 62% of bettors. Live game betting is also gaining popularity, with 85% of participants planning to bet during the game, a steep increase from the 61% recorded in 2023.

The report also sheds light on bettors' financial strategies, with 90% budgeting for weekly or seasonal gambling activities. Despite this caution, bettors show flexibility in choosing their platforms. According to the survey, "68% of respondents use two or more betting sites each week, up from 54% in the previous year. Promotions including free bets are the main draw, and 42% cited them as a key reason for choosing betting sites.

Participation in community betting activities is also still high, with 94% of respondents participating in betting and 79% participating in fantasy football. Watching NFL games regularly is common among bettors, with 74% consistently watching. Many of these 90% of viewers believe watching games improves their overall betting enjoyment.

The Optimov report also has encouraging news in the realm of responsible gambling, with 97% of bettors aware of responsible gaming resources. 67% have used these resources to cap bets or solve problem gambling problems. However, concerns remain, as 68% admit they can bet more than they can afford.

"The findings highlight the dynamic nature of NFL betting, the importance of responsible gambling, and the need for sportsbooks to optimize their participation and generous programs to increase player satisfaction and loyalty," the report concluded.
